The most common use of baking soda is to make cookies, cakes and breads. But there is a lot of more to it than being a part of our bakery products. If used wisely, it can become an integral part of our personal care products and is used for cleaning and deodorizing. The product is inexpensive, free of toxic chemical, can be used in a variety of ways and is effective.

How does baking soda work?

Baking soda can effectively regulate pH as it keeps a substance neither too acidic nor too alkaline. It has a neutralizing property by changing the pH balance, known as buffering. This helps to get rid of odors and is one of the most effective cleanser and deodorizers. Some of the most important health benefits of baking soda are:

Toothpaste- many people choose to make a toothpaste at home using baking soda. The composition consists of mixing baking soda with 3 % hydrogen peroxide. It is one of the best commercial non-fluoride toothpastes. One can also opt to add mint powder to the paste to have fresh breath. There is also an option where people can dip their brush in baking soda for and additional boost.

Get rid of the stench- some people suffer from the stench that emanates from their breath. They can add half a spoon of baking soda to a glass of water, swish and spit it out. Post this, they can rinse with water. It helps to neutralize odors unlike other mediums that only temporally cover the odor.

Glowing in skin- baking soda makes an excellent scrub by getting rid of the dead skin of the face and making it glow. Mix soda and water in the ratio of 3: 1 and rub this gently on your face in a gentle circular motion which helps to exfoliate the skin. Wash with tap water. This is safe and gentle and can be done every day.

Body odor- come summer and all of us are battling bad body odor. We resort to using expensive deodorants and perfumes that can be harmful to the skin. In place of that, one can use baking soda by neutralizing body odors.

Antacid- if you are a victim of chronic acidity, then you can use baking soda to get rid of acidity, heartburn, sour stomach and indigestion.

Relief from Insect Bites and Itchy Skin- if you are suffering from an insect bit that cause itching or burning, make a paste of baking soda and water. This provides quick relief and eases the itch. For people who are suffering from itchy skin, they can apply the powder on damp skin, after a bath.

Good for the hair- add a small amount of baking soda along with the shampoo and wash your hair. Rub it in and wash it off the way you usually do. This helps to neutralize the effects of styling products.

Wash your hands- instead of using harsh soap, just add a pinch of the powder to your regular hand wash and clean your hands.
